There are excellent recreational facilities within easy driving distance ranging from pleasure-boating and canoeing on the Canal Lateral (an off-shoot of the Canal du Midi), cycling, fishing, horse-riding, swimming, tennis (Castillonnes and Seyches), marked footpaths, wine-tasting and wine-touring to the more ambitious flying/hot-air ballooning/paragliding (Dordogne Balloons at Montpezat-d'Agenais near Aiguillon - 20 miles) also at Duras (17 miles) and quad biking.
Whilst the more energetic among you can try your hand at flying and paragliding from Montpezat-d'Agenais or quad biking at St Sernin de Duras, why not take it easy by choosing a more relaxed way to enjoy the beautiful countryside either by floating down the river Garonne on a barge or by catching a hot air balloon from just outside Duras.
Canoeing also at Allemans-du-Dropt (13 miles) and on the Dordogne and Lot Rivers. The River Lot at Clairac (12 miles) has a small sandy beach for excellent river-swimming. There is a vast leisure area on the banks of the Garonne at Marmande with running tracks, footpaths, volley ball, skateboarding, cycle paths, swimming and canoeing.
Bergerac Aquapark at Bergerac (33 miles) has 4 swimming pools with water chutes, bike hire, archery and mini-quad.
P'arc en Ciel at Lacapelle Biron (40 miles) has a very popular tree-top adventure playground for kids where, protected by safety harnesses, they can walk along ropes at the tops of trees. Varying levels of challenge according to their size and nerve. For smaller kids too young to tree-walk there are also some animals and amusements.
There are a number of golf courses for players of varying ability: Golf de Marmande (9 hole) 5 miles; Golf de Barthe at Tombeboeuf (9 hole) 12 miles; Casteljaloux (an 18 hole competition course overlooking a beautiful lake) 18 miles, to name but a few. One of the best, however, is Chateau des Vigiers at Monestier (18 hole) which also has an excellent restaurant and its own vineyard (25 miles)
Fishing for carp, bream, pike, trout, perch, catfish and zander on the River Dropt at Levignac-de-Guyenne (13 miles). Fishing licence available from the local tabac.
Quad Biking: Rêv' Quads Quad biking for over 16s who hold a motorbike or driving licence at Badefols-sur-Dordogne between Sarlat and Bergerac (43 miles). Quad also at St Sernin de Duras.
Bike Hire including safety equipment etc. is available locally for periods of three days or more with a delivery/collection service. Please ask us for details. It is advisable to book in advance, especially if required during the peak season. You can join a marked cycling circuit 450m from the house.
There are numerous walks/bike and vineyard trails virtually on the doorstep. Those who enjoy walking will find guidebooks in the house showing the many footpaths to be found in the surrounding countryside.
The tarmac cycle path that runs alongside the full length of the Canal de Garonne makes it an excellent place for flat walks - often shady too - when you can discover several interesting little villages and towns, notably Damazan, which might otherwise be missed.
The Chateau, which is set in acres of grounds, has been almost completely restored and is furnished, which in itself is unusual and makes it worth a visit from an historical viewpoint.
For adults and children alike it’s a superb family day out but an absolute must if you have children, being full of entertainment inside the chateau and in the grounds. Medieval games, jousting practice, giant chess, a crossbow range, writing with a quill, a visit to the skeleton in the dungeon..….the entertainment is endless. There are picnic areas inside the castle and out. Take a picnic with you and make the most of it.
This is a fun historical visit, a very unique experience that can be enjoyed in all weather conditions and a must for anybody holidaying in the area.
